Educated at Whitgift School and Manchester University (BSc in Maths and Philosophy)

1973–1976:
Editor for Elsevier Science in Amsterdam

1976-1985:
Correspondent/Stringer for the Guardian, Observer, Rand Daily Mail, IRN, RLN
Producer/production assistant for KRO Radio (e.g. conceived and produced the Dutch version of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams, now available on CD)

1976–Present:
Member of the Amsterdam Translators' Collective (1976-1980) with Peter van Oers, Harry Ekels, Frans van der Wiel
Translated plays include Zus en Zo (Werktheater - an "ideal translation", according to the Guardian) and Spinoza (Dimitri Frenkel Frank) as well as cabaret work by Freek de Jonge (Variety: "Martin Cleaver gets special credit for translating a Dutch stut.ter into English subtitles".)

Translated subtitles and/or scripts for at least 200 Dutch feature films and countless documentaries, TV and short films (see film list and IMDb) including films by Theo van Gogh, Ben Verbong, Pieter Verhoeff, Heddy Honigmann, as well as the children's films Minoes (dubbed and subtitled), Little Crumb, The Penknife and Eric in the Land of Insects .
